Political Leaders Vow to Uphold "April 19 Spirit" Amid Blame Game Over 'Rebellion and Democracy Crisis'

On the 65th anniversary of the April 19 Revolution, political leaders collectively pledged to uphold the spirit of April 19. At the same time, they shifted blame for the 'crisis of democracy' caused by martial law and the impeachment of the president onto rival parties.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Wonshik, Park Chan-dae, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party, and Kwon Seongdong, floor leader of the People Power Party, visited the National April 19th Cemetery in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, on the 19th. Speaker Woo wrote on Facebook, "In recent months, we have realized just how difficult it is to remove an unjust ruler and take a step forward in history," adding, "Such a difficult feat took place in 1960 in the Republic of Korea, a fledgling democracy at the time."

He continued, "April 19 symbolizes how great our people are and how deep the roots of our democracy run," emphasizing, "The lesson of April 19 is that we must fear the people who set this shining milestone and remain humble before history." He further noted, "This is a history that those responsible for the current transitional period in 2025, as well as all political forces seeking the trust of the sovereign people of the Republic of Korea, must reflect upon," quoting poet Shin Dongyup's poem "Let the Shells Go," which celebrates the spirit of April 19.

Park Chan-dae, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party, described the April 19 Revolution as a "revolution of light," saying, "The spirit of April 19, which demonstrated the sovereignty of the people in the face of dictatorship, became a revolution of light that dispelled the night of rebellion and once again saved the Republic of Korea." Park pledged, "Together with the people who showed that darkness can never overcome light, I will once again reflect on the spirit of April 19 and strive to ensure that our democracy is never shaken again."

Kwon Seongdong, floor leader of the People Power Party, wrote on his Facebook page, "The People Power Party will always remember and reflect on the democratic ideals of April 19 enshrined in the Constitution," adding, "We will carry on the spirit of the April 19 Revolution, achieved 65 years ago by righteous youths and citizens who took to the streets and shed blood, and continue the great history of liberal democracy."

Kwon emphasized, "I solemnly honor the will of all students and citizens who resisted injustice and wrongdoing in this land," and added, "The freedom and prosperity we enjoy today are imbued with the sacrifice, dedication, and noble spirit of countless individuals."

Chief spokesperson Shin Dongwook stated in a commentary, "The spirit of the April 19 Revolution is enshrined in the preamble of the Constitution and remains alive, but democracy now faces a grave crisis," pointing out, "Due to the Democratic Party's relentless legislative push, state affairs have been paralyzed, and even the separation of powers is now in jeopardy."

He continued, "Now, more than ever, the spirit of freedom, democracy, and justice is desperately needed," vowing, "We will stand up to the Democratic Party's tyranny, defend liberal democracy, and ensure that the lives of the people can once again be filled with hope."
