Lee Juho to Meet Medical Students... First Discussion Session Since Government-Medical Community Conflict

Discussion Session Hosted by the Korean Medical Policy School on the 22nd

Lee Juho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, will meet with medical students for the first time since the recent conflict between the government and the medical community.

The Ministry of Education announced on the 18th that Deputy Prime Minister Lee will meet with about 20 medical students at a discussion session hosted by the Korean Medical Policy School on the 22nd, where he will encourage students to return to classes and exchange opinions on measures to normalize medical education.

This meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the government and universities to explain their responses to the current situation, in which students from both the 2024 and 2025 academic years must take first-year classes together due to the disruption in medical education that began in February last year, and to hear the perspectives of medical students.

The government has proposed meetings with medical students several times, and Deputy Prime Minister Lee has also expressed his willingness to meet and engage in dialogue directly. However, this is the first time such a meeting has actually been arranged.

The breakthrough for this dialogue appears to have come after the government finalized the medical school admission quota for the 2026 academic year at 3,058?the same number as before the planned increase?the previous day.

The Korean Medical Policy School, which was established last month, is an institution aimed at training medical students and young doctors to become experts in healthcare policy.
