Seven military officers who were indicted without detention on charges including insurrection in connection with the 12·3 Martial Law have been additionally placed on prosecutorial suspension.
The Ministry of National Defense announced on the 18th that it would issue prosecutorial suspension orders for seven individuals, including former 707th Special Mission Unit Commander Colonel Kim Hyuntae and Defense Ministry Investigation Headquarters Chief Major General Park Heonsu.
The officers subject to prosecutorial suspension are: Investigation Headquarters Chief Park Heonsu, former 1st Airborne Special Forces Brigade Commander Brigadier General Lee Sanghyun, former Defense Security Command Counterintelligence Investigation Unit Commander Brigadier General Kim Daewoo, former Unit Commander Kim Hyuntae, former Defense Intelligence Command Planning Director Colonel Ko Donghee, former Central Newspaper Unit Commander Colonel Kim Bonggyu, and former 100th Brigade 2nd Business Unit Commander Colonel Jeong Seonguk.
According to the Military Personnel Act, prosecutorial suspension refers to a system in which a military officer is forcibly placed on leave at the discretion of a commanding officer. Once placed on prosecutorial suspension, the officer cannot be assigned to any other post until a verdict is finalized, and only 50% of their regular salary is paid during the suspension period.
Previously, in February, the Ministry of National Defense placed four individuals?former Defense Security Command Commander Yeo Inhyeong, former Capital Defense Command Commander Lee Jinwoo, former Special Warfare Command Commander Kwak Jonggeun, and former Intelligence Command Commander Moon Sangho?on prosecutorial suspension after they were indicted on charges including principal participation in insurrection related to the 12·3 Martial Law incident.
