"Dementia Prevention and Cognitive Enhancement"

Seogu District in Gwangju is promoting the "Brain Age Youth Project" to prevent dementia and improve cognitive abilities in response to the super-aged society.

According to Seogu District on April 18, the Brain Age Youth Project is a cognitive training program for dementia prevention that Seogu introduced last year, becoming the first local government in the country to do so.

This project, based on public-private cooperation, utilizes digital content and has achieved a 30.9% improvement in cognitive abilities among elderly residents. It is drawing attention as a low-cost, high-efficiency model for dementia prevention.

This year, in collaboration with SK Chemicals, the Haengbok Nanum Foundation, and Soundmind, the district will provide one-on-one customized cognitive and language training using artificial intelligence and voice recognition functions, along with more than 70 types of content designed to stimulate various brain areas such as memory, thinking, and attention. The program targets about 100 residents who use comprehensive social welfare centers and day care centers.

Seogu District plans to maximize the effectiveness of cognitive improvement by monitoring cognitive training results in real time and offering pre- and post-assessments such as cognitive screening tests and depression tests.

Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seogu District, stated, "As aging progresses rapidly, dementia prevention is a very important task not only for individuals' lives but also for the healthy future of the community," and added, "We will continue to expand practical dementia prevention policies so that seniors can maintain cognitive health in their daily lives."
