Established as a Sustainable Place to Live
Approved for Slow City Certification in 2017
Yeongyang County (Governor Oh Dochang) received approval for Slow City re-certification from the International Slow City Federation as of April 9, 2025.
Yeongyang County was first certified as a Slow City member on May 12, 2017. Over the past eight years, the county has embodied the Slow City philosophy of "seeking leisure, balance, and harmony," putting into practice the unique local values and sustainability. This re-certification serves as international recognition of those efforts.
A Slow City refers to a city that pursues a harmonious and balanced way of life by preserving its unique nature, culture, and community, even amid rapid urbanization and standardization. The International Slow City Federation comprehensively evaluates how faithfully each city has implemented these principles to determine whether to grant re-certification.
The county has fostered a relaxed and harmonious living environment through its pristine natural surroundings, eco-friendly agriculture centered on natural produce, and community-based management rooted in traditional culture. In particular, efforts to promote local food using regional ingredients and to preserve and carry on traditional lifestyles are recognized as exemplary cases of realizing the Slow City philosophy.
Governor Oh Dochang stated, "This re-certification is the result of the footsteps of everyone who has preserved the unique character of Yeongyang." He added, "We will continue to uphold Yeongyang's distinctive way of life, where nature, culture, and community are intertwined, and work together to build a sustainable future."
