The police investigating a man in his 50s who killed five family members, including his parents and wife and children, are deploying a profiler to conduct a thorough investigation into the motive behind the crime.

On the 18th, the Yongin Western Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced that they had brought in a profiler to assist in the investigation of Mr. A, who was arrested on charges of murder and killing a family member.

The profiler assigned to Mr. A is Detective Gong Eun-kyung (46, female) from the Forensic Science Division of the Southern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency. Detective Gong led the psychological analysis of Kang Ho-soon, who murdered 10 women in 2009, which resulted in a confession. She is also a top expert in profiling, having obtained confessions in the Lee Chun-jae case, one of the worst long-unsolved violent crime cases in South Korea.

The police plan to analyze Mr. A’s psychological state and tendencies through interviews conducted by the profiler. Based on this, they aim to identify the exact motive that led to the crime.

It is undecided whether to conduct a test for antisocial personality disorder (psychopathy). A police official stated, "Decisions such as conducting a psychopathy test will be made depending on the progress of the profiler’s interviews."

Mr. A is accused of giving sleeping pills to his family of five?his parents in their 80s, his wife in her 50s, and two daughters in their teens and twenties?at his apartment in Suji-gu, Yongin City on the afternoon of the 14th, then strangling them to death. After the crime, he left a note expressing his intention to "kill everyone and then kill myself," and fled to an officetel in Gwangju, where he had another residence, by car in the early hours of the 15th. He was apprehended by police later that morning.

He stated that while running a business related to apartment sales, he was sued by contract holders for "fraudulent sales," which led to enormous debts and civil lawsuits, and he said, "I could not let my family bear the debt." However, the police judged that the motive was unclear as to whether it justified killing his parents and family members.
