Samsung Electronics: "We Will Ensure No One Is Left Behind... Committed to Accessibility Features"

Yibona Shares Samsung Electronics' Vision for 'AI for All'
Appliance Accessibility Enhanced Through Universal Design
Collaboration with Experts and Users Drives Inclusive Innovation

Samsung Electronics is developing home appliances that are easy and convenient for all users to use under the vision of 'AI for All.' In particular, accessibility features for those with limitations in using home appliances, such as people with disabilities and the elderly, reflect Samsung Electronics' philosophy of implementing 'technology that leaves no one behind.'

Yibona, Executive Director of Samsung Electronics' Digital Appliances (DA) Division, said in an interview with Samsung Electronics Newsroom on the 18th, "Using home appliances requires various elements such as human senses of sight, hearing, and touch, as well as cognitive ability and muscle strength." She added, "These actions can pose limitations for some people." Samsung Electronics is striving to reduce the usability gap so that everyone can enjoy the convenience of the latest technology. To this end, they are applying various solutions such as providing tactile stickers on product buttons, adding accessibility sounds, and adjusting the location of control panels to make them easy to operate even for wheelchair users.

When asked about accessibility features that users may not easily recognize, Executive Director Yibona cited the 'Bespoke AI Combo' all-in-one washer-dryer as an example. "Previously, users had to turn a dial densely packed with small letters, but now, with the built-in screen, information can be easily checked through large letters, and the AI analyzes frequently used courses and displays them on the top screen," she explained.

She also added, "By using the 'SmartThings' routine, you can control lights and appliances with a single voice command like 'I'm going to sleep' without having to go to where the appliances are."

The 2025 model Bespoke AI new products are equipped with 'Voice ID' technology that identifies voices. Executive Director Yibona said, "We plan to provide accessibility settings tailored to accessibility users," adding, "At the same time, microphones and speakers are installed so users can ask about the operating status by voice, and major notifications are guided by voice." The 'Auto Open Door' feature, which received high user satisfaction, has also been expanded. This feature allows the door to open automatically with a light touch or by saying "Open the washing machine door" on various products such as refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, and dishwashers.

Executive Director Yibona revealed that Samsung Electronics is collaborating with specialized organizations such as the Korea Accessibility Evaluation Institute to receive evaluations and advice to strengthen appliance accessibility. She said, "Accessibility features for voice guidance and visibility improvement of screen appliances are being prepared to comply with the European Accessibility Act coming into effect in June."

Additionally, various activities to enhance accessibility are underway within the company, including the 'Samsung Family Supporters,' which involves employees with disabilities and their families, and the DX Division employee resource group.

Specific cases resulting from collaboration were also introduced. Reflecting the feedback from visually impaired users that "it would be convenient if it just connected to SmartThings, but the connection process itself is difficult," Samsung Electronics collaborated with TwoArt, the developer of the visual assistance app 'Sullivan Plus.' Executive Director Yibona said, "We introduced a dedicated mode that recognizes home appliances and allows easy connection to SmartThings," adding, "Sullivan Plus was selected for Samsung Electronics' startup nurturing program 'C-Lab Outside' and will provide an upgraded experience."

In addition, various assistive devices are being developed in parallel, such as a detachable handle assist device for users who have difficulty pulling drawers. The design files have been released on the 3D assistive device modification and production public platform 'ITDA' and are provided to users in need.

Regarding future directions, Executive Director Yibona explained, "The benefits of technology should be naturally accessible to everyone," adding, "We are reflecting universal design that embraces all and discovering items based on user data."
