[2025 Supplementary Budget] Government to Boost 'Domestic AI Semiconductors'... Launch of 'K-Cloud Task Force' in Second Half of the Year

The government will launch the 'K-Cloud Task Force' in the second half of this year to accelerate the commercialization of domestically produced artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors. On the 18th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced in the 'Follow-up Measures to Strengthen National AI Capabilities' that it will form a task force responsible for a large-scale data center demonstration project based on domestically produced neural processing units (NPUs). The goal is to test the performance of domestic chips suitable for real-world environments and promote early adoption. The task force will be established in conjunction with the submission of a 1.8 trillion won AI supplementary budget proposal.

An official from the Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "In the past, demonstrations were limited to small-scale server units within data centers, but going forward, we plan to create an environment where the latest large language models (LLMs) can be directly operated at the cluster level." He added, "Through this, we aim to advance the timing of domestic chips being deployed in large-scale AI services."

Through this supplementary budget, the government has significantly increased the budget for the AI semiconductor demonstration project from 29.8 billion won to 75.2 billion won. Additionally, 193.6 billion won will be invested for leasing advanced private-sector graphics processing units (GPUs) and data utilization for the 'World Best LLM Project,' known as the development project of the 'Korean-style ChatGPT.' The GPUs, with a goal of securing 10,000 units within the year, will be used to expedite the operation of the National AI Computing Center. Furthermore, follow-up measures covering the entire AI ecosystem, such as preferential evaluation for AI data centers outside the metropolitan area and attracting high-level talent, will also be promoted together.
