A mass shooting occurred at Florida State University in the United States, resulting in 2 deaths and at least 6 injuries. The suspect was identified as a current student at the university and the 20-year-old son of a local deputy sheriff responsible for regional law enforcement.


According to the Associated Press and other sources on the 17th (local time), the suspect opened fire near the student union building on the Florida State University campus around 11:50 a.m. During the incident, 2 people were killed and 6 were wounded by gunfire. One of the injured is reported to be in critical condition.


Local police identified the suspect as Phoenix Eckner (20), the son of a deputy sheriff responsible for law enforcement in the area. It was confirmed that the firearm used in the crime was a service weapon previously used by his mother.


Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated on X (formerly Twitter), "Let us pray for the Florida State University families," adding that "the state's law enforcement agencies are actively responding."


U.S. President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident and described it as a "horrible event."
