Six Schools Including Gusan Elementary Participate
Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced on the 18th that it will actively promote the 'School Meal Reserve Food Donation Project,' which shares 'reserve meals'?food prepared but not served in school meals?with neighbors in need instead of discarding them.
For this project, the district recently conducted a demand survey targeting elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. Six schools, including Gusan Elementary School, Sangsin Elementary School, Susaek Elementary School, Deoksan Middle School, Dongmyeong Girls' High School, and Seonil Girls' High School, expressed their willingness to donate reserve meals.
The donating schools established a stable sharing system for transporting reserve meals through agreements with participating organizations. These organizations safely deliver the donated reserve meals to vulnerable groups, local children's centers, and neighborhood care centers in need of food within the community. The participating organizations include the Susaek-dong Community Security Council, Eunpyeong Food Bank Market, and Sinsa General Social Welfare Center.
The reserve meal donation project is expected to achieve multiple benefits, including realizing community sharing, reducing carbon emissions to combat the climate crisis, and lowering school meal disposal costs?effectively hitting three targets with one initiative.
Reserve meals refer to meal samples set aside separately to check the condition of food prepared before serving. This procedure is established to prevent food poisoning and manage meal hygiene.
District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung said, "By returning reserve meals discarded at schools to the community, we can reduce food waste and provide a warm meal to our neighbors." She added, "We plan to expand this project to more schools in the future."
