Seongdong-gu Starts Operating Shade Shelters to Prepare for Heatwaves... Ahead of Extreme Heat

Seongdong-gu (District Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will begin operating heatshade shelters from April 21 to prepare for the summer heatwave.

Heatshade shelters are large parasols measuring 3 to 5 meters installed at crosswalks without shade or around traffic islands, providing cool shade by blocking sunlight while waiting at traffic signals.

In particular, they play a very important role in pedestrian safety for children and the elderly by blocking strong ultraviolet rays during periods when the road heat island effect intensifies.

This year, a total of 167 heatshade shelters will be operated, including around Wangsimni Station. The operation period will last until November, and the district has completed pre-inspection and maintenance of all shelters ahead of full-scale operation.

In case of expected typhoons or strong winds during operation, the use of shelters will be immediately suspended, and the district will pay special attention to weather conditions by frequently checking changes and adjusting opening and closing times accordingly to ensure safety.

Additionally, to avoid inconvenience to users, frequent inspections and prompt maintenance will be conducted during the operation period, and if necessary, additional installations will be actively considered by reflecting residents’ opinions.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "With temperatures rising every year and heatwaves lasting longer, we are doing our best to install and maintain heatshade shelters," adding, "We will make even more thorough efforts to ensure a safe daily life free from various natural disasters."
