SK Telecom announced on the 17th that it held follow-up discussions to strengthen cooperation in the quantum business sector with IonQ, a U.S. quantum computer company.
On the 17th, SKT met with IonQ executives at the T Tower in Euljiro, Seoul, to discuss cooperation plans related to the quantum business. Attending from IonQ were Peter Chapman, Chairman of the Board; Thomas Kramer, Chief Financial Officer (CFO); Philip Para, Head of Corporate and Strategic Partnerships; and Jin Jaehyung, Head of the Korea branch. From SKT, CEO Yoo Young-sang and other key officials participated.
This meeting was held as a follow-up discussion to the strategic partnership, including a share exchange, that the two companies signed last February. SKT had established an alliance with IonQ to prepare for the AI and quantum era.
Through the meeting, both companies reaffirmed their shared interests in areas such as quantum networking and quantum security and agreed to continuously strengthen cooperation in these fields. They also reviewed the possibility of expanding SKT’s partnerships with government agencies and companies related to its quantum security business into the quantum computing sector.
In particular, they agreed to maintain and enhance cooperation with the Swiss quantum cryptography company ID Quantique (IDQ) and to jointly engage in activities to promote the potential and possibilities of quantum computers. The two companies had previously concluded a deal in February exchanging all 50% of IDQ shares held by SKT and SK Square for approximately 3.1% of IonQ shares.
CEO Yoo said, "Cooperation with IonQ is an opportunity for SKT to expand its business scope not only in quantum security but also in quantum computing," adding, "We will continue to invest and collaborate to lead the market going forward."
