Special Documentary "Miracle, Toward People"
Airs on the 20th at 8:10 PM on KBS1
Shedding Light on the Lives of Missionaries Who Came to Joseon 140 Years Ago
The special documentary for the 140th anniversary of Korean Christianity, "Miracle, Toward People," will air on the 20th at 8:10 PM on KBS 1TV. It is part of the 140th Anniversary Commemorative Event of Korean Christianity, organized by the Korea Christian Federation and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
This documentary tells a story about "people" through the perspective of missionaries who came to the unfamiliar land of Joseon 140 years ago to spread the Christian gospel. It covers the lives of missionaries who treated those marginalized by society due to class, gender, and poverty without discrimination, based on biblical values.
It also highlights the educational dedication of missionaries who led the use of Hangul. Early missionaries recognized the scientific excellence of Hangul and actively utilized it. This is supported by Underwood’s "Korean-English Grammar," who founded Yonsei University’s predecessor Yonhee College; Hulbert’s "Saminpilji," the first modern Korean geography textbook in Hangul; and Avison’s Hangul anatomy textbook "Anatomy," which laid the foundation for Severance Hospital. These efforts are credited with greatly contributing to the spread of Hangul and the establishment of a modern grammatical system. Missionaries played a significant role in the process by which Hangul, once disparaged as "Eonmun," was recognized as "Gukmun."
A representative from the Korea Christian Federation stated, "By highlighting the 140-year history of Korean Christianity with a focus on 'people,' we expect this to provide an opportunity to reflect on the dedication of missionaries and the changes in Korean society that resulted from it. It will offer viewers a chance to reconsider the influence of Christianity and revisit its historical significance."
