A Yellow Flag at City Hall... Remembering and Mourning 304 Victims
Mayor Kang Attends Ansan Memorial Ceremony... City Officials Visit Joint Memorial Altar
Gwangju City marked the 11th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster on the 16th by raising the 'Sewol Yellow Flag' at the city hall flagpole, remembering and mourning the victims, and pledging to build a 'Safe City Gwangju'.
On this day, the city hung a memorial flag with the phrase "We will not forget" on the national flagpole to honor the victims. This act is a pledge not to forget the 'Sewol Ferry Disaster', which claimed 304 lives when the Sewol passenger ferry, heading to Jeju Island, sank near Jindo on April 16, 2014, and to build a society that values safety and life.
Mayor Kang Gijung, who worked from the 'Yeouido Office' that day, attended the '11th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony of the Sewol Ferry Disaster' held in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province in the afternoon to pay tribute to the victims.
Vice Mayor Ko Gwangwan and public officials also visited the 'Sewol Ferry 11th Anniversary Citizens' Joint Memorial Altar' set up at the May 18 Democracy Square in the morning to honor the victims. The city's public officials paid tribute to the victims at the joint memorial altar, offered comfort to the bereaved families, and pledged to take the lead in building a safer society. In particular, they expressed their gratitude to the Sewol Ferry victims' families, who have taken on the role of guardians of safety and life.
Mayor Kang stated, "Today, we raised the Sewol flag at the Gwangju City Hall flagpole. The Sewol families have been guardians of safety and life, providing comfort and solidarity even in the midst of social disasters and at the impeachment plaza. On the 11th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, we once again pledge to build a society that values safety and life. I will do my utmost to make Gwangju a city where people can feel safe anytime, anywhere, and where the daily lives of citizens are protected."
