Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, held the '1st Changwon City 2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee of 2025' at the City Hall's 3rd conference room on the 16th.
The Changwon City 2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee was established in February, with Deputy Mayor Cho Myungrae as chairperson, and consists of a total of 24 members including city council members, experts in fields such as environment, energy, buildings, and transportation, as well as civic groups. The committee is responsible for deliberating, deciding, and advising on major policies for transitioning to a carbon-neutral society and promoting green growth.
At the meeting, the committee deliberated and approved the following: ▲The 1st Changwon City Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Basic Plan ▲The 2024 Climate Crisis Adaptation Measures Implementation Review Results.
The 1st Changwon City Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Basic Plan is a statutory plan under the Basic Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth for responding to the climate crisis. It sets a target to reduce emissions by 40% compared to 2018 levels (a reduction of 2.33 million tons of greenhouse gases) by 2030 in sectors under local government authority such as buildings, transportation (roads), agriculture and livestock, circular economy, carbon sinks, and waste.
To achieve this, the city plans to ensure consistency with the national and Gyeongnam Province master plans, and, through consulting with Korea Environment Corporation, expert advice, and public hearings, finalize 22 core projects and 100 practical projects, with annual implementation evaluations and feedback.
Additionally, as a result of the 2024 implementation review of the 2nd Climate Crisis Adaptation Measures, the city received a 'very excellent' rating with a total score of 93.3 points across 36 detailed projects in 7 sectors.
The 1st Changwon City Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Basic Plan and the 2024 Climate Crisis Adaptation Measures Implementation Review Results, approved by the Changwon City 2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee, will be submitted to Gyeongsangnam-do and the Ministry of Environment.
Deputy Mayor Cho Myungrae said, "This basic plan contains practical goals and plans for realizing carbon neutrality in Changwon City, and it is necessary to continuously review and supplement them to ensure effective policy implementation in the future," adding, "We ask for the committee's continued interest and cooperation for the transition to a sustainable carbon-neutral society."
