Gwangju Civic Groups Call for Impeachment of Martial Law Coup Remnants

Civil organizations in Gwangju have called for the impeachment of the remaining instigators of the December 3 Martial Law Incident and urged for thorough punishment through the enactment of a special investigation law on insurrection.

The Gwangju Emergency Action for the Settlement of Insurrection and Social Reform (Gwangju Emergency Action) held a press conference in front of the Gwangju City branch of the Democratic Party of Korea in Seo-gu, Gwangju, on the morning of the 16th. They stated, "Former President Yoon Sukyeol, who was unanimously removed from office due to the recognized illegality and seriousness of the charges in the December 3 insurrection, is still being protected by the Presidential Security Service and walking freely in public," and added, "The Democratic Party of Korea must promptly impeach the remaining instigators of the insurrection and isolate them from state affairs and the investigation into the insurrection."

Gwangju Emergency Action said, "The ringleader of the rebellion, who should be immediately rearrested and face strict judgment under the law, is receiving unprecedented privileges from the court presided over by Ji Guyon, who assisted in his escape using illegal legal tactics," and emphasized, "Far from showing any remorse, the People Power Party, which has not even expelled him, is staging a comedy with more than ten presidential candidates in chaos."

They continued, "The public is outraged by this abnormal situation. Where does the current situation, in which blatant injustice that goes against the common sense and feelings of the people is taking place, originate from?" and pointed out, "It is because high-ranking officials, connected to former President Yoon, who are complicit in the insurrection, are continuing the insurrection through unconstitutional and illegal actions."

They also stressed, "We urge the Democratic Party of Korea to rectify this abnormal situation as soon as possible through the impeachment of the remaining instigators and the enactment of a special investigation law on insurrection," and added, "Evidence to uncover the truth of the December 3 insurrection is being destroyed due to organized obstruction by the remaining instigators and the sluggish investigation."

Additionally, "Those who were complicit in the insurrection must be immediately impeached," and added, "This is the minimum action to show that justice is alive in our society and the basic measure to prove that sovereignty belongs to the people."
