Yuhan Corporation and the Seoul Medical Association held the 58th Yuhan Medical Awards ceremony on the afternoon of the 15th at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. The ceremony was attended by Hwang Gyu-seok, President of the Seoul Medical Association, and Kim Yeol-hong, President of Yuhan Corporation, among others.
The Grand Prize of the 58th Yuhan Medical Awards was awarded to Associate Professor Park Wan-beom (Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine). The Young Medical Scientist Awards were given to Associate Professor Choi Ki-hong (Department of Internal Medicine, Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine) and Assistant Professor Na Min-seok (Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine), respectively.
The grand prize winner of the Yuhan Medical Awards receives a prize of 50 million KRW, and each recipient of the Young Medical Scientist Award receives 15 million KRW. Associate Professor Park Wan-beom, the honored grand prize winner, was highly recognized for developing the world's fastest antimicrobial susceptibility testing technology, which enables faster and more accurate antibiotic administration for patients with bacteremia reflecting severe infectious conditions in the future.
Associate Professor Choi Ki-hong, who received the Young Medical Scientist Award, demonstrated through research that smokers who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention and completely switch to electronic cigarettes or quit smoking can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who continue to use conventional cigarettes. Assistant Professor Na Min-seok proved that, beyond the existing blood antibody response, the respiratory mucosa such as the nose performs a primary antiviral response after vaccination. He was honored for suggesting directions for next-generation mucosal vaccines and vaccine strategies that induce long-term immunity.
Notably, the 58th Yuhan Medical Awards judging process aimed to promote overall medical advancement by selecting winners across various specialties, including internal medicine and otorhinolaryngology.
President Hwang Gyu-seok emphasized, "The Seoul Medical Association will actively strive to ensure that many individuals dedicated to medical research will have opportunities to receive the Yuhan Medical Awards in the future."
Kim Yeol-hong, President of Yuhan Corporation, stated, "We hope that the passionate dedication and noble spirit of researchers will lead to infinite medical advancements, and we will continue to work to ensure that the Yuhan Medical Awards contribute to this path."
The Yuhan Medical Awards, hosted by the Seoul Medical Association and sponsored by Yuhan Corporation, were established in 1967 with the purpose of "laying the foundation for the future development of medicine and encouraging the research enthusiasm of medical scientists." Since then, it has played a pivotal role in advancing domestic medicine. As the oldest medical award in Korea, the Yuhan Medical Awards have produced over 100 recipients representing the Korean medical community and have established themselves as the most prestigious academic award system in the country.
