A sudden sinkhole occurred at the crosswalk near Bupyeong Station in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, causing the authorities to install safety fences and restrict vehicle traffic.

According to Incheon City on the 16th, a report was received around 8 p.m. the previous day stating, "It seems a sinkhole is about to occur at the crosswalk in front of Bupyeong Station." The investigation revealed that the sinkhole measured 5 meters in width and 10 cm in depth. Although there were no casualties, vehicle traffic on the road was restricted.


Incheon City believes that the upper soil layer partially subsided due to freezing during the construction of the underground passage and subsequent thawing as the weather warmed. The city plans to conduct a detailed safety inspection to determine the exact cause of the incident.


With sinkhole incidents occurring nationwide day after day, public anxiety is increasing. On the 13th, a sinkhole approximately 20 cm wide and long and 10 cm deep occurred at a crosswalk near Gangdong Station in Cheonho-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul. On the 2nd, a sinkhole measuring 20 cm wide and long and 50 cm deep was discovered at an intersection near Sinmyeong Elementary School in Gil-dong, Gangdong-gu.
