Dobong-gu 'Sinkhole' Prevention... 10.3km of Aging Sewer Pipes Maintenance

Dobong-gu (District Mayor Oh Eon-seok) announced that it is promoting a large-scale maintenance project to repair old and deteriorated sewage pipelines.

Aged sewage pipelines are considered a major cause of ground subsidence accidents due to voids under the road surface (donggong 洞空). To prevent this, the district has been carrying out maintenance projects by dividing the area into zones since last year.

The first area targeted last year was a total 3.2 km section of old sewage pipelines in Banghak 1-dong and Dobong 1-dong.

The main construction tasks include repairing old and damaged sewage pipelines, correcting reverse slopes and reverse steps. The project aims for completion in August, with 8.5 billion KRW of city funds invested. The current progress rate is about 81%.

Since January this year, construction has begun on a total of 7.1 km of old sewage pipelines throughout the entire district. Excavation improvements and non-excavation methods (repair and reinforcement) are being carried out according to the condition of the pipelines. The project targets completion in October, with 8.8 billion KRW of district and city funds invested.

As maintenance work is being conducted throughout the district, efforts are also ongoing to minimize complaints from residents. A district official stated, "To minimize inconvenience to residents, we are flexibly adjusting construction work hours and implementing thorough on-site management and safety measures."

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, "The sewage pipeline maintenance project is an important initiative for the safety and convenience of residents. We will continue to maintain old sewage pipelines and reflect residents' opinions to create a safer living environment."
