Sued for Professional Negligence Resulting in Death
A police officer who responded to a drunk driving incident injured a colleague by twisting the colleague's arm instead of the suspect's. It was later reported that this officer was sued by the colleague.
According to Yonhap News on the 15th, the Wonmi Police Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, is investigating Sergeant A from the Ansan Sangnok Police Station on charges of professional negligence resulting in death.
Sergeant A is accused of twisting the arm of Sergeant B, who belongs to the same police station, on a road in Sangnok-gu, Ansan City, at around 1:20 a.m. on April 17 last year, causing injury. At the time of the incident, they had responded to a report of suspected drunk driving and encountered a situation where the suspect attempted to flee and needed to be restrained.
Corporal C, who was with them, apprehended the suspect and handcuffed one wrist. Then Sergeant B tried to handcuff the suspect’s other wrist, but the suspect resisted. Witnessing this, Sergeant A intervened. However, Sergeant A reportedly twisted Sergeant B’s arm backward instead of the suspect’s.
As a result, Sergeant B suffered a fractured elbow and other lasting injuries and filed a complaint with the police in December last year. Sergeant B’s side claimed, "The streetlights and vehicle headlights were bright enough that there was no chance of confusing the suspect, and since only one more handcuff needed to be applied to the suspect’s other hand, it was not an urgent situation." During the police investigation, Sergeant A reportedly stated that he mistook Sergeant B’s arm for the suspect’s and twisted the wrong arm.
Meanwhile, it was confirmed that the two have no particular friendship or grudge against each other. The police summoned both individuals for separate investigations and plan to determine whether to apply charges.
