Hong Beom-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, said on the 15th, "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing at an incredibly fast pace even at this very moment. We believe we are about 2 to 3 years behind," but added, "We do not consider 3 years to be too long and will do our best to ensure we do not fall behind in the competition."
At the site visit of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee (STIBC) to LG Science Park in Magok-dong, Seoul, Hong said, "LG Uplus is developing human-centered AI technology that can earn people's trust based on various technologies developed by LG AI Research, and plans to commercialize it soon," adding, "We are confident that we have made meaningful progress not only in data learning and algorithm development but also in ethical aspects."
He said, "These days, the phrase 'national competition' is often used when talking about AI," and added, "It is quite a challenging task for a single company to secure competitiveness in the national competition through technological advancement." He then called for "in-depth discussions between the private sector and the National Assembly on AI regulation, talent cultivation, and ecosystem direction."
Baek Kwang-hoon, director of LG AI Research, said, "Because we have continuously invested in AI, the recently developed generative AI model 'EXAONE' has grown into a globally recognized model," and added, "If you continue to show interest and support, we will achieve good results in the future." The 'EXAONE 3.5' model, introduced by LG AI Research in December last year, was the only Korean model to be included in the list of notable AI models of last year selected by the Human-Centered AI Institute (HAI) at Stanford University, USA, on the 7th (local time).
On the day, eight members of the STIBC, including Chairperson Choi Min-hee, attended the site visit. CEO Hong and Director Baek held a briefing session for the lawmakers on their AI models. LG Uplus is expected to present its AI call application 'ixi-O,' and LG AI Research will focus on the EXAONE series.
Earlier, in February, the STIBC visited Naver headquarters and issued a bipartisan joint statement pledging unwavering policy support for the leap to become a global top 3 AI power (AI G3). The statement included ▲large-scale AI investment and infrastructure development ▲strengthening communication with the AI industry ▲improving AI laws and systems and expanding international cooperation ▲and prompt implementation of follow-up measures such as budget allocation.
