Sharing Achievements of the 2024 Project
Full-Scale Launch of the 2025 Project
Yangsan City, Gyeongnam, officially announced the full-scale launch of its 2025 project with the 2nd year kick-off meeting for the 'Super Gap Technology Development and Demonstration Project for Aerospace and Defense Sealant Materials' held on the 14th.
This meeting brought together a total of 11 organizations, including the Korea Conformity Laboratories and Gyeongnam Technopark as the lead institutions, as well as Noroo Paint, Green Chemical, Seoul National University, Gyeongsang National University, Saeron Tech, Pusan National University, Korea University, Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology, and Korea Institute of Science and Technology.
The meeting served as a venue to review the achievements of the first-year (2024) project, share challenges, and discuss future development directions. Participants also shared the strict quality management system of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and real-world examples from Tesco, and took time to understand the process for obtaining the U.S. QPL (Qualified Products List) certification, which is the ultimate goal of the project.
The QPL is an extremely rigorous and demanding quality certification system in which the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) establishes quality, reliability, and performance standards for military supplies and only approves procurement of products that meet these standards.
As a result of the first-year project, five pieces of material and product performance evaluation equipment were established at the Yangsan Innovation Support Center, and prototype production and technical support were provided to four companies. In the field of technology development, prototypes of polysulfide-based and polyurethane-based sealants were produced and their physical properties verified, and methods for analyzing and evaluating international standards for polythioether-based and silicone sealants were established, achieving significant results.
Based on these achievements, the plan for the second year (2025) is to pursue more advanced technology development and commercialization. By further strengthening cooperation among related organizations through this meeting, the development of the aerospace and defense sealant industry is expected to accelerate.
An official from Yangsan City stated, "We positively evaluate the fact that each organization has organically collaborated to lay the foundation for the development and commercialization of domestic sealants," and added, "We hope that by actively fulfilling their respective roles, this will lead to successful outcomes."
