Larvae Monitoring Conducted
Environmental Maintenance and Sanitary Facility Inspections to Address Concerns about Larvae Habitats
Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 15th that it had conducted the '2025 Joint Larvae Response Inspection by the Environmental Office and City/County' at local water purification plants to ensure the supply of tap water safe from larvae.
This joint inspection was carried out by the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, Korea Water Resources Corporation, and Hamyang-gun. It was organized as a proactive measure to prevent larvae incidents in the summer due to the recent rise in temperature.
The inspection targeted two facilities: Hamyang Water Purification Plant and Sasang Water Purification Plant. The focus was on checking for the presence of larvae in the filtering basins, the sample monitoring system of larvae strainers at each purification process, and the condition of sanitary and insect-proof facilities.
As a result of the inspection, no larvae were found at either purification plant, and the larvae-blocking systems and sanitary facility operations were confirmed to be in good condition.
Hamyang-gun has independently installed sprinklers to prevent egg-laying in the coagulation and sedimentation basins and fine screens in the effluent channels as a response to larvae. In the filter room, fine insect screens, air curtains, and insect traps have been replaced or maintained to block the inflow of insects from outside.
In particular, in 2024, with national funding support from the Ministry of Environment, fine filtration nets were installed in the clean and distribution reservoirs to completely block small organisms.
Additionally, larvae monitoring in each water purification process is conducted daily by visual inspection and at least three times a week by microscope, ensuring the production of clean tap water.
An official from the Waterworks and Sewerage Office stated, "We will do our best to supply safe tap water by conducting regular larvae monitoring and constant sanitary inspections at each stage of the purification process."
