Advanced Light Sculpture 'The Sphere' Born on Songpa-daero

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) will unveil 'The Sphere,' an advanced light sculpture planned as part of the 'Songpa-daero Premium Street Development Project,' upon its completion on the 23rd.

The district is transforming the 1.5 km stretch of Songpa-daero from Seokchon Lake to Garak Market into a pedestrian-friendly street garden. At the starting point, the media art installation 'The Sphere,' located at Seokchon Lake Intersection, will reveal its spectacular appearance after 1 year and 6 months of construction.

'The Sphere' is a 7-meter diameter spherical structure made with a special curved LED display, boasting a uniquely attractive exterior. It supports high-definition 4K resolution with 22-bit color and consists of 3,096 LED panels, enabling bright and vivid colors even under strong sunlight outdoors.

Based on solid technological expertise, a total of 27 types of media art content are displayed. These include ▲a basic screen showing current weather and time as images, ▲Walking Together featuring Songpa landmarks such as the Gate of Peace and The Trophy, ▲the four seasons of Seokchon Lake, ▲cute spherical character emojis Haha and Hoho, ▲a solar system series depicting planets like Mars and Jupiter as if landed on the ground, ▲a masterpiece series where various elements in famous paintings come to life, and ▲various commemorative day series such as Hangul Day, offering artistic and diverse visuals that captivate viewers.

Interactive content that communicates with visitors is also provided. When visitors take photos at a kiosk, the images are transformed into various artistic styles such as oil painting, webtoon, and traditional Korean painting, and then displayed on the spherical screen as lasting memories. The results from the day are exhibited separately at night in a collage format. The district is currently considering multifaceted content development plans, including participation by young media art artists.

'The Sphere' operates from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., subject to future changes. During the last hour, it will display the experience results of that day’s visitors to enhance the urban night atmosphere, with all personal data of participants immediately destroyed.

Prior to completion, the district is renovating the area around the facility into a bright resting place called 'The Sphere Garden' with flowers to allow visitors to enjoy the media art more comfortably.

Additionally, on the 21st, a special tour inviting foreign influencers will be held to promote the installation worldwide.

The Sphere, a new landmark of the district, is also significant as the nation’s first permanent media art installation located in an urban waterfront park. Along with the Lake Bridge Gallery completed in March, it is expected to showcase Songpa’s unique media art and serve as a bridge connecting tourists who previously stayed only by the waterfront to Songpa-daero.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, "The Sphere, a culmination of advanced technology and artistry, will elevate the status and brand value of Songpa-gu as an international city. We hope more visitors will enjoy The Sphere and walk along the 'Unprecedented Path,' the Songpa-daero street garden, all the way to Garak Market."
