Presidential Election Accelerated by Yoon Impeachment... Election Expenses Up to 58.8 Billion KRW Per Candidate Possible

National Election Commission Announces Presidential Election Expense Limit

The election expenses that candidates can use in the June 3 presidential election have been confirmed at 58.85 billion won.

The National Election Commission announced on the 14th, "We have finalized the election expense limit for the presidential election and notified each political party and prospective candidate."

This year's election expense limit was calculated by multiplying the total national population as of February 28 by 950 won, applying the election expense limit calculation rate considering the national consumer price fluctuation rate (13.9%), and then adding the total allowances for election managers and others. This is an increase of 7.543 billion won compared to the 20th presidential election.

In the last presidential election, the Democratic Party claimed 43.852 billion won, which was 85.5% of their total claimable amount, and the People Power Party claimed 40.929 billion won, which was 79.8% of their total claimable amount.

If a candidate is elected or receives 15% or more of the total valid votes within the limit, they are reimbursed for all election expenses spent within the election expense limit. If they receive between 10% and less than 15%, they are reimbursed half.

The presidential election was originally scheduled to be held in 2027, but it is being held this year because former President Yoon Seok-yeol was impeached due to an unconstitutional state of emergency.
