Daejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo has announced that he will not run in the early presidential election.
During a press conference held on the afternoon of the 14th, Mayor Lee stated, "Regardless of any circumstances, I will not run in this early presidential election," and added, "I believe that successfully completing my term as mayor and earning the trust of the citizens is what the people want, rather than jumping into new competition amid political turmoil."
He continued, "The presidential impeachment incident was a stark revelation of the disappearance of politics in Korea," emphasizing, "For Korea to stand upright, new values and vision are desperately needed, and at the center of that must be Chungcheong."
He added, "I will find my role in the responsibilities of Chungcheong and as the mayor of Daejeon, the central city of Chungcheong," and said, "The success of Daejeon is the vision of Chungcheong and the future of Korea, so I will do my best as the mayor entrusted by the citizens and repay them with results."
Mayor Lee presented major issues for the presidential election, including the undergrounding of the Honam Expressway, relocation of Daejeon Prison, rapid promotion of the second phase relocation of public institutions, and the relocation of the presidential office to the boundary between Daejeon and Sejong.
Mayor Lee has maintained the position that a Chungcheong candidate is essential to strengthen the political presence of the Chungcheong region in the next presidential election, and during an expanded executive meeting on the 8th, he had stated regarding his potential candidacy, "I am giving it careful consideration."
