The deputy heads of Gwangju Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do, and Naju City have jointly called for the approval of the preliminary feasibility study for the "Gwangju-Naju Metropolitan Railway Project."

According to Naju City on the 12th, Ko Gwang-an, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Gwangju, Myung Changhwan, Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs of Jeollanam-do, and Ahn Sanghyun, Deputy Mayor of Naju, attended the 5th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan (Gwangju-Jeonnam Area) meeting held on the 11th.

At the meeting, hosted by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission at the Kimdaejung Convention Center in Gwangju, participants focused on the approval of the preliminary feasibility study for the Gwangju-Naju Metropolitan Railway Project. They discussed the necessity and expected effects of the project for overcoming the risk of local extinction and promoting balanced national development.

After the meeting, the deputy heads gathered together to reaffirm their commitment and cooperation through a banner performance expressing their wish for the approval of the feasibility study.

They stated, "The Gwangju-Naju Metropolitan Railway Project is more than just a means of transportation; it will form a metropolitan economic network connecting Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Naju, serving as a key pillar for balanced national development and regional coexistence."

Meanwhile, the Gwangju-Naju Metropolitan Railway is the first national metropolitan railway project in the southwest region, aiming to promote balanced national development and overcome local extinction by connecting the nation's only joint innovation city.

The plan is to construct a 26.26km double-track electric railway by 2030, connecting Gwangju Sangmu Station, Daechon, Naju Nampyeong, Innovation City, and KTX Naju Station, with a total project cost of 1.5192 trillion KRW.

The project was included in the 4th National Rail Network Construction Plan in 2021, selected as a target for a preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in May 2023, and is scheduled for review in June this year.
