The 89th Masters began on the 10th (local time) at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, USA, with opening shots by Jack Nicklaus (85), Tom Watson (75, both from the USA), and Gary Player (89, South Africa). Despite the chilly weather at around 10 degrees Celsius, the clear skies attracted spectators from early morning local time. Introduced by Fred Ridley, chairman of Augusta National, the three legends appeared and signaled the start of the masters' battle with their composed and skillful tee shots full of experience.
Player was the first to hit a driver shot, and Nicklaus, who received applause from the moment he placed his tee, celebrated by raising both arms after delivering a splendid shot. Watson, the youngest among the three starters, also drew applause and cheers with his steady shot. Together, they have won a total of 11 Masters titles and made 140 appearances. Nicklaus holds the record for the most Masters wins with six, Player has three, and Watson has two. Since 1963, starting with Jock Hutchison and Fred McLeod, the Masters has held opening ceremonial tee shots by senior players every year except for some exceptions.
