Wanju County Launches Campaign to Promote Prevention of Tick-borne Diseases and Tuberculosis

The Gosan and Bongdong Health Centers in Wanju County, Jeonbuk, held a public awareness campaign on tick-borne infectious diseases and tuberculosis prevention at Gosan Market on the 9th.

According to the health center on the 10th, this campaign was organized to raise awareness about the dangers of tick-borne infectious diseases such as Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) and to widely promote the importance of early detection and prevention of tuberculosis, as the spring season marks the start of active outdoor activities.

SFTS mainly occurs from this month through November and is caused by bites from ticks carrying the virus. In 2024, a total of 22 confirmed cases have been reported nationwide.

After an incubation period of 5 to 14 days, symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, muscle pain, and diarrhea may appear. Since there is no vaccine or specific treatment and the fatality rate is high (about 20%, or 1 in 5 cases), it is crucial to recognize symptoms early and receive appropriate treatment.

To prevent tick-borne infectious diseases, it is recommended to wear long clothing during outdoor activities, shower and change clothes after returning indoors, and use tick repellents. For tuberculosis prevention, it is important to practice proper cough etiquette and get tested if coughing persists for more than two weeks.

Campaign participants provided information on infectious disease prevention guidelines, distributed promotional materials, and offered one-on-one health consultations, guiding residents on easy-to-follow health practices in daily life.

Lee Jaeyeon, head of the health center, said, "The best way to prevent tick-borne infectious diseases is to avoid being bitten by ticks. Those who frequently engage in farming or outdoor activities should be especially cautious."

He added, "Early screening and consistent treatment are most important for tuberculosis as well, so I hope everyone actively takes advantage of the free screening provided once for those aged 65 and older at the health center."
