Oisolution announced on the 10th that it demonstrated smart optical transceiver (Smart SFP) interoperability in collaboration with the global network equipment company Cisco Systems at 'OFC 2025,' the world's largest optical communication exhibition held in the United States.
The smart optical transceiver, exclusively owned by Oisolution worldwide, differs from general optical transceivers that only convert electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa. The smart optical transceiver is a highly efficient optical transceiver with added software functionality.
Functions that were previously implemented through communication systems can now be realized within the optical transceiver itself, eliminating the need to build separate systems. To achieve this, a programmable semiconductor (FPGA: Field-Programmable Gate Array) is embedded inside the optical transceiver to maximize integrated data processing for various functions including protocol conversion, OAM, and synchronization bridging. The main application area of the smart optical transceiver is network migration from TDM to Ethernet. A rich device port portfolio supporting all related TDM speeds is available.
Oisolution is a key partner of the global network equipment company Cisco Systems and has supplied customized smart optical transceivers. Park Yong-gwan, President of Oisolution, said, "At OFC 2025, we demonstrated the interoperability between Cisco PLE routers and PLE Smart SFPs for the first time in the world, and simultaneously agreed on cooperation including jointly promoting the standards committee with senior executives of Cisco." He added, "By joining hands with Cisco Systems, we will accelerate the application of PLE technology for next-generation network advancement along with expanding interest from global maintenance engineers."
