According to major foreign media including the Associated Press, local authorities reported on the 8th (local time) that at least 113 people died and 155 were injured when the roof of the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, collapsed.

At the time, a performance by Ruby Perez, a merengue singer originating from the Dominican Republic, was underway, and authorities estimated that about 500 to 1,000 people were inside the club.

Among the deceased were celebrities. Octavio Dotel, a pitcher who played for 13 teams over 15 years in Major League Baseball, was seriously injured and transported to a hospital but died. Tony Blanco, a batter who played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan, also died in the accident. Perez, who was performing, was found dead as well.

The building where the accident occurred is known locally as an entertainment sanctuary where the 'Lunes Bailable' party, a "Monday good for dancing" event gathering domestic and international artists and celebrities, is held every Monday.

The club issued a statement saying, "This accident is shocking to everyone," and that they are cooperating with authorities regarding the accident response.
