The Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident Fact-Finding and Victims' Honor Restoration Working Committee held its 13th meeting at the Eastern Government Complex in Jeonnam Province on the 9th, completing the review of 417 cases involving victims and their families. The committee decided to request deliberation and decision from the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Honor Restoration Committee.
With this, the total number of cases processed and completed by the working committee has reached 5,492, accounting for 74% of the reported cases (7,465).
Of the 417 cases that passed the review at the committee meeting, 165 included official documentation, and 252 included guarantor statements and other supporting documents. Individual review opinions will be prepared for each case and submitted to the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Honor Restoration Committee for deliberation and decision regarding the victims and their families.
The working committee also reaffirmed its commitment to faithfully fulfill its duty to uncover the truth of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, especially in this period of national transition, and to carry out this responsibility in accordance with laws and procedures.
The committee also pledged to thoroughly promote all memorial projects, including additional case registrations following the revision of the special law enforcement ordinance (March 18 to August 31), the provision of living subsidies for victims' families, the expansion of the 2nd Yeosu Peace Literature Award, and preparations for the 77th joint memorial ceremony for the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident.
Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, stated, "At this important time when the nation is seeking a new order, the state's responsible efforts to heal past wounds can serve as the starting point for social integration. The working committee will do its utmost to heal the pain of the victims and their families as soon as possible and to achieve full restoration of their honor."
He added, "Since the term of the fact-finding report planning team expired on the 4th, I once again strongly urge the government to dismiss all members affiliated with the New Right from the team and to completely reorganize the planning team with experts who possess a fair and politically balanced understanding of history, in order to ensure proper fact-finding and full restoration of honor for the victims and their families."
