'Carbon↓ Resource Efficiency↑'… LG OLED TV, 5 Consecutive Years of UK Organization Carbon Footprint Certification

OLED TVs to Reduce 16,000 Tons of Plastic This Year

LG Electronics' premium TV lineup, OLED TVs, is strengthening its competitiveness in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) aspects by consecutively obtaining environmental certifications from leading overseas certification bodies.

LG Electronics announced on the 9th that its 2025 model OLED TVs recently received the 'Carbon Footprint' certification from Carbon Trust, a UK-based non-profit certification organization. This marks the fifth consecutive year since 2021 that OLED TVs have received the Carbon Footprint certification.

The Carbon Trust's Carbon Footprint certification is awarded after a comprehensive evaluation of carbon dioxide emissions generated throughout the entire process from product manufacturing to distribution, usage, and disposal. The G5 (83, 77, 65, 55-inch) and C5 (83-inch) models certified this year were recognized for reducing carbon emissions compared to existing products in the same class and were classified as 'carbon-reduced' products.

Resource efficiency is also noteworthy. LG Electronics' OLED TVs have also obtained the 'Resource Efficiency' certification from Intertek, a global testing and certification organization based in the UK. The Resource Efficiency certification is granted only to products that pass strict evaluations including ▲material usage efficiency ▲energy-saving effects ▲use of recycled materials.

This certification was applied to the M5, G5, C5, and B5 models. LG Electronics explained, "OLED TVs have fewer components than LCDs because they do not require backlights, and they use lightweight composite fiber materials, resulting in high resource efficiency."

In fact, the 65-inch OLED TV uses about 60% less plastic and weighs about 20% less compared to LCD TVs of the same class. Accordingly, LG Electronics expects to reduce approximately 16,000 tons of plastic solely from OLED TV production this year. This leads to a reduction of about 84,000 tons of carbon emissions during production and transportation processes, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed in one year by 30-year-old pine trees covering an area of 11,000 soccer fields.

LG Electronics is also accelerating the expansion of recycled plastic usage. Last year, about 30% of the plastics used in the entire TV production process, including OLED TVs, were replaced with recycled materials, and this year, the company plans to increase that to 50%. Through this, LG expects to recycle approximately 7,700 tons of waste plastic annually.

Domestic environmental certifications are also continuing. Eight new products, including the 2025 LG OLED Evo, recently received the 'E-Circular Excellent Product' certification from Korea's E-Circular Governance. This certification is awarded to products considering resource circularity and environmental performance, and LG Electronics has maintained a record of winning for three consecutive years.

Baek Seonpil, head of TV product planning, said, "LG OLED TVs are premium products that combine excellent picture quality and artificial intelligence (AI) features with environmentally friendly design," adding, "We will continue to realize ESG management through sustainable product development."
