Gyeonggi-do, First Local Government to Support Legal Fees for Single-Parent Family Childcare Cost Claims

Gyeonggi Province is launching the 'Child Support Claim Litigation Cost Support Project,' the first of its kind among local governments, to protect the rights of children in single-parent families struggling with unpaid child support and to create a stable child-rearing environment.

The support targets single-parent families raising minor children under 19 years old with a household income at or below 125% of the median income. However, those who have used government-supported free legal aid services from the Child Support Enforcement Agency or the Korea Legal Aid Corporation are excluded from eligibility.

Litigation costs related to child support (such as child support claim lawsuits and child acknowledgment claim lawsuits) will be supported up to a maximum of 1 million KRW per household, and applicants must possess a finalized court judgment dated 2025 or later.

The project will be carried out by the Gyeonggi Single-Parent Family Support Hub Institution, which is privately commissioned by Gyeonggi Province. For more details, visit the website (www.gghanbumo.or.kr) or contact (031-241-0328).

Yoon Young-mi, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Women and Family Bureau, stated, "According to the 2024 Single-Parent Family Survey by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the greatest difficulty across all child age groups is the burden of child support and education expenses. We hope that this litigation cost support measure to secure child support enforcement will help alleviate the economic burden on single-parent families, even if only slightly."

Gyeonggi Province continues to expand policies for single-parent families, including being the first nationwide to relax the median income criteria (from 63% or below to 100% or below) for parents who do not receive government child support.
