First Call Between Han and Trump in 152 Days Since Yoon-Trump Conversation
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Acting President, spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on the 8th, the Prime Minister's Office announced.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, Acting President Han began the call with President Trump at around 9 p.m. local time (8 a.m. U.S. time) from his office at the Government Seoul Complex. This is the first time the leaders of South Korea and the U.S. have spoken since the start of Trump's second administration.
President Trump spoke with former President Yoon Seok-youl for 12 minutes on November 7 last year, shortly after his election, discussing trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, the South Korea-U.S. alliance, and North Korea's situation regarding the Ukraine war. However, contact between the two leaders was delayed due to the December 3 emergency martial law situation and the impeachment proceedings against former President Yoon.
Acting President Han spoke with then-U.S. President Joe Biden on December 15 last year, but after the impeachment proceedings on December 27, he was unable to contact President Trump.
