Choi Hojung, Chairperson of Seoul Metropolitan Council, "Renovating Han River for Safe and Convenient Use"

Choi Hojung, Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, visited the Han River maintenance site around Garaeyeoul Village in Gangil-dong, Gangdong-gu on the 7th and ordered measures to ensure citizen safety and convenience.

This site visit was arranged to directly verify complaints from local residents received by the city council and to check the progress of the Han River access road improvement and waterfront space development projects. Park Chunsun, the local council member for this area, accompanied the visit.

One resident said, "The Han River is right in front of us, but there are insufficient streetlights and CCTVs, making it feel unsafe at night. Also, the walking paths and rest areas are not properly established, which is disappointing," requesting facility improvements.

The Han River area near Garaeyeoul Village has been designated as a water source protection zone and ecological landscape conservation area, and was left unattended. However, with the creation of bike paths and walking trails, citizen use has increased. Nevertheless, complaints about safety concerns due to lack of security facilities, pavement damage, and insufficient convenience facilities have been continuously raised.

Chairperson Choi received an on-site report from the Future Han River Headquarters on the status of the Han River maintenance project in Gangdong-gu and then carefully inspected the Han River area on foot with officials.

As part of Seoul City's Han River waterfront environment improvement project this year, 18 streetlights and 2 CCTV locations (4 cameras) will be installed by May, and pavement maintenance of a 0.9 km walking trail section will be completed. It is expected that the walking environment and citizen convenience will be greatly enhanced through tree maintenance and the creation of rest areas.

Chairperson Choi Hojung stated, "Since the Han River is an asset for all Seoul citizens, it is urgent to maintain it so that Gangdong-gu residents can also use it safely and comfortably," and added, "We will support the project to ensure it proceeds smoothly based on the opinions gathered on site."
