Actor Robert De Niro will receive the Honorary Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes International Film Festival.
On the 8th (local time), the Cannes Film Festival announced that Robert De Niro has been selected as the recipient of the Honorary Palme d'Or at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at the opening ceremony on the 13th of next month. The Cannes Film Festival praised him as "a legendary figure to film fans worldwide through his deeply heartfelt acting." De Niro expressed his thoughts, saying, "At a time when the world is dividing us, the Cannes Film Festival brings us together," and added, "It feels like coming home."
De Niro debuted with Brian De Palma's The Wedding Party (1968) and rose to fame as the persona of director Martin Scorsese, becoming a renowned actor. Starting with Mean Streets (1973), he took leading roles in films such as Taxi Driver (1976), New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), The King of Comedy (1982), and Goodfellas (1990). Even in his later years, he showed passionate acting in films like The Irishman (2019) and Flower Killing Moon (2023).
He also left impressive performances working with other directors. Notable works include Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part II (1974), Roland Joff?'s The Mission (1986), J. Lee Thompson's Cape Fear (1991), Michael Mann's Heat (1995), Nancy Meyers' The Intern (2015), and Todd Phillips' Joker (2019).
De Niro also has a deep connection with the Cannes Film Festival. The films he starred in, Taxi Driver and The Mission, won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, and in 2011, he served as the jury president. The Honorary Palme d'Or, which he will receive this time, is a special award given to filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the global film industry. Recent recipients include Jodie Foster, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, and Meryl Streep.
