Government to Crack Down on Illegal Truck Operations Until November

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it will conduct joint crackdowns on illegal truck operations from the 9th until the end of the year.

The Ministry, along with the National Police Agency, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Korea Expressway Corporation, Regional Land Management Offices, and local governments, will participate. The first phase will target the metropolitan area and the Gangwon and Chungcheong regions until June, and the second phase will cover the Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions nationwide from September to November.

They will focus on checking compliance with safety standards at nationwide highway toll booths, rest areas, and national road overload inspection stations where accidents are frequent and many trucks operate. They will examine regulations under the Freight Transport Business Act, such as measures to prevent cargo spillage, prohibition of tampering with speed limiters, and whether freight worker qualification certificates are displayed on vehicles. Overloading and illegal modifications will also be inspected.

If violations are detected on site, administrative actions such as orders to restore the original state, suspension of business, or suspension of operation will be taken according to the relevant laws and violation-specific disposition standards. Depending on the violation, fines of up to 3 million KRW may be imposed.

Um Jeong-hee, Director of the Transportation and Logistics Office at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "We ask related agencies and the transportation industry to strengthen cooperative systems for road traffic safety, and also request the freight industry to voluntarily make efforts to prevent traffic accidents."
