Naju City in Jeollanam-do will conduct a “rice seed germination test” to check the germination status of self-harvested rice seeds ahead of the full-scale rice sowing season.

This test is a measure to prevent seedling failures by verifying the quality of seeds before sowing, and to help ensure a stable start to rice farming by creating healthy seedling beds.

The test will be conducted at the Naju Agricultural Technology Center until the 30th of this month. Farmers wishing to have their seeds tested can submit 100g to 300g of rice seeds to the Technical Support and Food Crops Team and will receive the results in about seven days.

The germination test is carried out by first measuring the moisture content of the rice seeds, then soaking them and incubating them at 30°C for five days. The germination rate is calculated based on the emergence rate of normal roots and shoots.

Choi Chunok, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “Seeds with low germination rates may result in poor emergence, leading to double damage such as resowing. It is most important to use seeds whose quality has been verified through testing.”

She added, “We will support farmers so they can start rice farming more stably through accurate and highly reliable testing.”
