Gwangju University (President Kim Dongjin) and the Gwangju-Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Association for Children with Leukemia and Cancer announced on the 7th that they held the "Hopeful Path with Lighty" event, a social contribution activity providing emotional healing and talent donation from university majors to children with leukemia and cancer and their families.
The event, held on the afternoon of the 5th at the Gwangju University gymnasium, was attended by over 150 people, including children with leukemia and cancer and their families, President Kim Dongjin of Gwangju University, university deans and directors, students, officials from the Gwangju-Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Association for Children with Leukemia and Cancer, and representatives from the Gwangju Nam-gu Volunteer Center.
The event featured a sports festival, recreation, and various experiential booths. This event is the first case nationwide in which a local higher education institution and a welfare organization jointly planned and operated a program with a strong sense of social responsibility.
Gwangju University and the Gwangju-Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Association for Children with Leukemia and Cancer signed a social service agreement in December last year to pledge mutual cooperation in supporting children with cancer. Gwangju University students also participated in this community bonding event, which encourages and provides emotional healing for patients and their families, by contributing their talents as part of their social contribution efforts.
The Department of Food and Nutrition presented a performance on healthy eating habits, the Department of Nursing provided hand-washing education and a health musical performance by the department's club "Top-us," and the music club "Oseonji" performed a stage featuring children's songs and popular music. In addition, the Department of Sports Science hosted a family sports festival, and the Department of Beauty and Cosmetology offered face painting, all of which were well received by the children and their families.
The Gwangju Nam-gu Volunteer Center, which participated as a cooperating organization, operated experience booths reflecting local sentiment, such as making spinning tops and a poster campaign, to support the children and their families. On this day, Gwangju University students and staff also delivered 388 blood donation certificates collected last year to the Korea Association for Children with Leukemia and Cancer.
President Kim Dongjin of Gwangju University said, "Seeing the dignified and courageous attitude of the children who do not lose hope and bravely overcome their difficult battle with illness, I learn what it means to be truly courageous," and added, "With all my heart, I pray that the children will soon leave their hospital beds, return to the arms of their beloved families and friends, laugh freely, run and play, and return to a happy daily life."
