Democratic Party and independent members of the Gwangju City Council stated on the 7th, "We welcome this historic ruling that has protected the Constitution and democracy."
At the 'Impeachment Trial Report Rally' held in front of the city council that day, they declared in a statement, "It has been 122 days since the illegal martial law was imposed on December 3 last year, and 111 days since the National Assembly passed the impeachment bill on December 14. The Constitutional Court has now delivered its impeachment ruling, removing the ringleader of the rebellion, Yoon Sukyeol, from office," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that this serves as an opportunity for Korea to become a more just and democratic society."
The council members said, "Yoon Sukyeol abandoned his responsibility as president to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, and committed a grave crime by destroying constitutional order and democracy through illegal martial law," explaining, "On the evening of December 3, citizens witnessed the shameless actions of the forces involved, and set aside their daily lives to raise their voices in defense of democracy and justice."
They continued, "The unanimous removal ruling by the Constitutional Court holds great significance in the history of Korea's constitutional government. It is a just verdict that reflects the will of the people," and emphasized, "The demands of citizens, who have endured and waited long enough, led to the unanimous impeachment decision by the Constitutional Court."
The council members also reiterated, "Gwangju is a proud city that has fought against dictatorship and injustice as the sacred ground of democracy in Korea," and added, "Now the winter of rebellion is over, and the spring of democracy and livelihood has arrived. The Gwangju City Council will take the lead in restoring the collapsed democracy and justice."
