Key News Selection and Summarization

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 7th that, together with the Korea Press Foundation, it will fully revamp 'BigKinds,' the country's largest news analysis system, into an artificial intelligence (AI)-based news service on the 24th.

BigKinds is a service that analyzes over 100 million news big data from comprehensive daily newspapers, economic newspapers, regional dailies, broadcasters, and more. Anyone who registers as a member can use the service for free to search original news articles, download analysis data, and receive news of interest via email. Last year alone, 1.92 million people visited the site, utilizing it for startups, public service improvements, news reporting, research, education, and contributing to the creation of added value in news content. In particular, since February last year, BigKinds AI service has been launched to answer user questions based on information within articles, and its functions have been further advanced over the past year.

This revamp enhances user convenience and strengthens AI capabilities beyond simple news search services to perform news summarization, file analysis, and continuous conversations that remember previous dialogue and maintain the context of questions, known as 'follow-up questions (multi-turn).' Especially, it includes a feature to check 'Today's Issues' by category and compare and analyze perspectives from various media outlets, significantly broadening the depth and breadth of news exploration.

'Today's Issues' is a feature where approximately 10,000 news articles collected daily from 104 media outlets are classified by fields such as politics, economy, and society, and key issues are selected and summarized by 'BigKinds AI.' Users can quickly grasp the flow of daily news without reading each article individually. Through the 'Media Outlet-Selected Answers' feature, users can also receive AI responses reflecting the perspectives of their preferred media outlets.

A function to analyze materials other than news is also added. When users upload document files such as Hangeul (HWP) or PDF, BigKinds AI analyzes the content and allows users to have a conversation about the analysis results. Press releases, reports, and various documents can be easily and freely analyzed using BigKinds.

A policy official from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated, "This revamp is an important turning point for BigKinds to evolve into an AI-based news analysis platform," adding, "The Ministry will continue to improve the BigKinds service so that all citizens, including journalists and researchers, can analyze and utilize news more easily."
