Studies on Abe's 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific' Initiative and Abenomics
According to Kyodo News on the 6th, National Chengchi University in Taiwan plans to establish the "Shinzo Abe Research Center" as early as this fall. The university held its first meeting to establish the research center in February, organized matters related to its structure and regulations, and plans to hold an opening ceremony in late September.
The research center is expected to be set up as an affiliated organization of the "College of International Affairs," which is responsible for international relations research at National Chengchi University. The institute plans to conduct in-depth studies on contemporary Japanese diplomacy and economy, focusing on former Prime Minister Abe's "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" initiative and the economic policy known as "Abenomics."
A representative from National Chengchi University stated, "While evaluations of former Prime Minister Abe vary within Japan, he is viewed positively in Taiwan," adding, "The purpose of this research center is to deepen mutual understanding between Japan and Taiwan."
Kyodo News analyzed that the research center aims to continue academic exchanges between Japan and Taiwan and to nurture young Japanese researchers in Taiwan.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Abe was shot and killed during an election campaign in July 2022. At that time, Lai Ching-te, then Vice President of Taiwan, visited Japan to pay respects to Abe. In September 2022, a statue of former Prime Minister Abe was installed in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Kyodo News also reported that entrepreneurs in Tainan City are leading efforts to build a memorial hall for former Prime Minister Abe.
