The government has decided to provide emergency living expenses of 3 million won as a priority to wildfire victims in the Yeongnam region. Additionally, it will conduct related inspections to prevent damage caused by landslides and other issues following the fire.
On the 5th, Ko Gi-dong, head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (acting Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety), held a meeting at the Government Seoul Office and stated, "To prevent further damage in the wildfire-affected areas, we will promptly carry out preventive projects such as removing hazardous trees and reforestation, and establish measures to minimize landslides and other soil disasters before the rainy season." He added that the Korea Forest Service dispatched an 'Emergency Diagnosis Team for Wildfire-Affected Areas' to Ulju-gun, Ulsan, to inspect areas at risk of landslides.
Head Ko said, "Based on the evaluation results, emergency restoration in necessary areas will be completed by June, and permanent restoration will be promoted sequentially."
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, as of 6 a.m. that day, 1,972 households, totaling 3,274 people, are temporarily evacuated. Approximately 2,400 people have moved from temporary evacuation facilities to temporary lodging facilities. So far, about 92.5 billion won in public donations has been collected through organizations such as the Disaster Relief Association. Emergency living expenses of 3 million won will be provided first to victims of human and housing damage.
Furthermore, the government plans to establish and finalize a long-term recovery plan by the end of this month based on the results of the joint central disaster damage investigation, which will be conducted until the 15th.
Head Ko stated, "In the future, permanent housing for disaster victims will be promoted not only by government ministries but also linked with housing projects of public institutions," and added, "We will establish special measures, including institutional improvements and financial support, so that the affected areas can recover as communities reflecting their characteristics." He also emphasized, "Since this month is a period requiring special attention and care for wildfire prevention, I urge related agencies to conduct thorough wildfire surveillance and monitoring, and ask all citizens to comply with wildfire prevention guidelines."
