The city plans to pursue the designation of an International Conference Complex District to maximize the synergy effect by linking the Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center (POEX), scheduled for completion in 2026, with nearby tourism and accommodation facilities.
If designated as an ‘International Conference Complex District’?defined by law as an area concentrated with international conference facilities, accommodations, retail spaces, and performance halls?it will be regarded as a special tourist zone, receiving benefits such as relaxed floor area ratio regulations, financial support, and reductions in traffic impact fees.
At the meeting, a detailed action plan was presented to develop Pohang into a ‘sustainable global MICE hub,’ based on the research conducted since October last year.
The research analyzed the current status and environment of the international conference industry and focused on detailed projects by strategy and a development roadmap.
The report outlined a vision centered on four key tasks: ▲Innovation of global MICE infrastructure ▲Development of regionally specialized content ▲Quality enhancement based on public-private cooperation ▲Sustainable industry positioning, with eight strategic tasks and 31 individual projects.
The strategic tasks included: ▲Expansion of advanced convention facilities ▲Expansion of participant-friendly support infrastructure ▲Development of MICE professionals ▲Establishment and activation of networks ▲Brand development and advancement of the Pohang International Conference Complex District.
Park Sangjin, Head of the Tourism Convention City Promotion Headquarters, stated, “This report meeting is an important milestone for Pohang to leap forward as a global MICE hub city,” adding, “We will expand our global network centered on the Pohang International Exhibition Convention Center and invigorate the local economy.”
