Statement Released on the 3rd (Local Time)
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), warned that U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies could pose significant risks to the global economy.
According to Bloomberg News, Georgieva stated in a release on the 3rd (local time) that President Trump's reciprocal tariff policies present a major risk to the global economic outlook during a period of slowing growth.
Georgieva said that IMF staff are assessing the macroeconomic impact of President Trump's reciprocal tariffs and emphasized, "It is important to avoid actions that could cause greater harm to the world economy."
She added, "We urge the United States and its trading partners to work constructively to ease trade tensions and reduce uncertainty."
It is unusual for the IMF to voice criticism toward its member countries, especially the United States, its largest shareholder.
However, the IMF has previously issued warnings regarding U.S. policies. In June last year, it pointed out that the U.S. fiscal deficit was too large and burdened by excessive debt. It also noted that trade policies under the previous Biden administration were becoming increasingly aggressive.
Meanwhile, the IMF and the World Bank plan to address this issue at their meeting in Washington later this month.
