On the 4th, Gwangju City held a preview tour event for local residents to experience the new Hanam District Municipal Library ahead of its official opening, as construction of the library has been completed.
This event was organized to inform residents about the library's facilities and services, and to provide an opportunity to experience and promote the new cultural space in advance.
Residents who participated in the event toured various library facilities, including the reading rooms, multimedia room, digital resources room, children's and youth reading areas, and lounge spaces, and shared their opinions on operational plans.
The Hanam District Municipal Library project was initiated as part of the "One Municipal Library per Autonomous District" policy to expand public libraries. In February 2016, Gwangsan District, the Gwangsan District Council, and the local community requested the construction of the municipal library, and in December 2017, the project site was finalized.
The city invested a total project cost of 29.2 billion KRW, established the basic plan in July 2019, began full-scale construction in September 2023, and recently completed the construction, now proceeding with the approval process for completion.
Located in Hanam 2 District of Gwangsan-gu, the Gwangju Municipal Hanam Library consists of one basement level and four above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 6,896 square meters. It is designed as a modern, nature-friendly, and comfortable space where residents can read, learn, and enjoy various cultural activities.
The library will provide special spaces for children and youth, as well as a variety of community programs to support the cultural growth of local residents. In addition, residents' feedback was actively reflected in the construction process, including the creation of community spaces, securing additional parking, and expanding walkways. The library is organically connected to nearby parks, creating a space where nature and culture coexist.
Shin Jaeuk, Director of the General Construction Headquarters, stated, "The Municipal Hanam Library will become a cultural asset and landmark of Gwangsan-gu, and is expected to serve as an important milestone for regional development. It will go beyond being just a space for reading books, providing cultural vitality to residents through various programs and activities."
Meanwhile, Gwangju City is currently working on interior design to ensure optimal conditions for library use, and plans to officially open the library in December after completing the interior construction.
