Expressing Strong Determination to Stabilize the Local Economy and Protect Citizens' Daily Lives
On the 4th, Pohang Mayor Lee Kangdeok expressed his strong commitment to stabilizing the local economy and protecting the daily lives of citizens through a statement following the Constitutional Court's decision to uphold the president's impeachment.
Mayor Lee stated, "We respect the decision of the Constitutional Court, and now is the time for us to come together to swiftly overcome social unrest and economic crisis, and to achieve stability and unity."
He went on to explain that the domestic economy is suffering a double blow of sluggish domestic demand and declining exports due to the effects of protectionism and economic bloc formation, and that Pohang's key industries, such as steel and secondary batteries, are also facing difficult circumstances.
Accordingly, Pohang City emphasized that it will prioritize the livelihoods of its citizens and do its utmost to restore the economy and protect daily life.
To this end, Mayor Lee announced plans to actively propose to the government and the National Assembly the designation of special industrial crisis response zones, the enactment of support laws for the steel and secondary battery industries, and the designation of a special zone for distributed energy. He also revealed plans to revitalize local businesses by expanding the nation's largest special guarantee support program for small business owners.
Mayor Lee further emphasized that establishing the POSTECH medical school and smart hospital, as well as attracting the National AI Computing Center, are key tasks for securing future growth engines, and that all efforts will be focused on strengthening the competitiveness of local industries.
In particular, Mayor Lee promised thorough management to ensure a fair and smooth presidential election, which is scheduled to be held within 60 days in accordance with the Constitutional Court's ruling.
Additionally, as the Gyeongbuk region is currently experiencing the worst wildfire damage in history with many displaced residents, Mayor Lee said that in difficult times, it is all the more important to help and rely on each other, and to move forward together toward a brighter future.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "No matter the situation, I will remain steadfast, uphold the core values of municipal administration?restoring livelihoods, reviving the local economy, and preparing for future industries?and move forward to the end. I will advance together with the citizens so that Pohang can become the center of Korea's leap forward."
