Experts have issued a warning that wearing underwear barefoot can cause infections in sensitive areas.

According to a report by the Daily Mail on the 1st (local time), dermatologist Dr. Samuel Chowdhury warned on his social media that fungal infections can spread from the feet to the genital area.

Dr. Chowdhury stated, "Tinea pedis (athlete's foot) is a very common condition, with about 70% of people experiencing it at least once in their lifetime," adding, "Among them, 20% will experience the same infection in the groin area." He continued, "The spores of the fungus on the feet come into contact with underwear and are transferred to the groin. Not wearing underwear is not the solution, but wearing socks first acts as a barrier and helps prevent infection."

In fact, when infected with tinea cruris, itching or burning sensations are felt in the groin, inner thighs, and anal area. The affected areas appear red, yellowish-brown, or brown, with peeling and cracking of the skin. The areas with tinea develop brown pigmentation, which can remain for a long time even after complete recovery.

Research shows that young men are most likely to develop the condition, and it is also common among those who work in hot environments, wear tight clothing, or are obese. Since fungi naturally live on the skin, they usually do not cause problems, but wearing sweat-soaked clothes after exercise exposes the skin to moisture for extended periods, allowing the fungus to multiply rapidly.

Finally, Dr. Chowdhury warned, "People who suffer from persistent groin itching should consider the condition of their feet and take care of them."
