Kukhim Jeong Gwangjae: "We Must Accept Constitutional Court Ruling and Issue a Message"

"Should Contain a Message of National Unity"

As the Constitutional Court reached a conclusion on President Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment trial on the 4th, Jeong Gwang-jae, spokesperson for the People Power Party, said, "If one is a responsible politician and president, they should accept the Constitutional Court's decision and deliver a message about how the Republic of Korea should move forward."

Spokesperson Jeong appeared on MBC Radio's 'Kim Jong-bae's Focus' and said, "There is talk that since the martial law period, our people have shown a level of division similar to the political situation after liberation in 1945." He added that if the Constitutional Court upholds the impeachment, the message President Yoon delivers should "contain a message of national unity." Regarding the possibility of a message of non-acceptance, he emphasized, "It is an unimaginable area," and "There should be no message of non-acceptance."

Regarding the impeachment trial result, Spokesperson Jeong said, "Would my prediction have any significance?" but added, "There are absolutely many members in our party who oppose the impeachment. While there is recognition that mistakes were made related to martial law, many have doubts and oppose whether it should lead to impeachment, so it is true that there are many hopeful predictions."

He continued, "Given the recent cancellation of President Yoon's detention and the acquittal in the second trial of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, if the judiciary applies its judgment very strictly, the possibility of dismissal or rejection has increased compared to the past," and said, "There were various rumors even during the process of setting the sentencing date. Considering these talks comprehensively, many expect that the possibility of dismissal or rejection is higher than when the impeachment trial began."

Regarding the ruling party and opposition party's dispute over 'acceptance of the verdict,' he said, "Acceptance of the Constitutional Court's ruling is something all citizens must do," and added, "This impeachment is also a kind of trial. The accuser is the National Assembly, and the accused is President Yoon. It is natural that both the accuser and the accused must accept the trial result, and they cannot refuse to do so."

He further stated, "I find it difficult to agree with Lee's statement that 'acceptance is something Yoon Seok-yeol must do,'" and added, "President Yoon must accept it, but since the Democratic Party has been leading this impeachment motion, the side that initiated the trial should also naturally accept the result."
